As tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of Walt Disney World I scoured some of my parent’s photos and found these of the Contemporary. They were taken the first year they were open. In fact my folks stayed there in the Garden Wing in 1972. Legend has it is I am a souvenir of that trip.
The Disney Contemporary Resort opened in 1971 as the first phase of the new Walt Disney World Resort.
- Designed by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) using a unique process called “unitized modular construction.”
- Each 9 ton room was slid into place in a 150 ft high steel skeleton
- Other “Phase One” resorts that never made it off the drawing room floor were inspired by Asian, Venetian and Persian motifs
- Original motif was a groovey 1970s version of a modern and slightly futuristic environment

Those are some awesome old photos. I love the one inside..
Fantastic vintage photos. The skyline around the Contemporary has certainly changed a bit. Enjoying your blog and just became a follower. Snow White would love it if you did the same. 🙂
These are some great photos. I remember visiting WDW as a child & thinking that this was the coolest building ever. It seemed so futuristic back then. Thanks for sharing!
Great pictures!! Glad you were able to find these. What a fun souvenir! 😀
Haha! Love that you're a souvenir!
Me too. I wish it was better quality. I would love to see the detail.
I would be happy too. : )
That's an awesome souvenir, my oldest is a Disney World honeymoon souvenir! The Contemporary is my favorite resort!
