Ashley Eckstein at Disney Social Media Moms Celebration

At the 2013 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration ( #DisneySMMoms ) I had the wonderful pleasure to listen to and meet Ashley Eckstein as she was interviewed by Gary Buchanan of The Disney Parks Blogduring the Star Wars Weekends (#StarWarsWeekends ) segment.

I must admit I had no idea who Ashley Eckstein was at the beginning of the presentation but by the end of the session I was a fan.

Ashley is the voice of Ahsoka Tano in the very popular animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  This was a dream come true for her as she had grown up a huge Star Wars fan.    As she began attending Sci-Fi conventions and talking to fans she realized the gap in Sci-Fi clothing made for women.

In 2010 she began  Her Universe of Sci-Fi merchandise for women.  She quickly learned she knew nothing about obtaining licensing and marketing her clothes.   But Disney and the Star Wars franchise saw the potential and gave her a chance.  In fact Disney’s Star Wars Weekends was her first avenue to show her vision to the world and women instantly fell in love with her clothes.

But that is not where this story ends.   She began getting mail and meeting fans that would tell stories of being picked on at school for being a girl and liking Science Fiction.   Ashley felt compelled to add a a new layer to Her Universe and created a community where Fan Girls of all ages felt safe to let their voices be heard and step into the spotlight and shine.

In 2013 she launched an intiative called Year of the Fan Girl.  Each day she features a Fan Girl of the Day and their inspirational story.   The girl can be of any age, 1 – 101 years old, and is nominated by friends and family.  Ashley does this to celebrate you, the Fan Girl, and how special you are!

She also added an Ask Ellen section to her blog.  This is a venue where you can Ask Ellen anything anonymously.  This can be everything from how to handle being sterotyped to bullying and harassment.    It really is a great way for you and other Fan Girls to share what you are going through and band together.

I was and still am a Sci-Fi fan.  Luckily I did not get bullied in school but did get razzed from time to time.   I have known others that were bullied and I love that Ashley has set up a community for Fan Girls to go to for support.

Ashely is a one of a kind.  She actually cares about you and is doing what she can to help through her company Her UniverseYear of the Fan Girl, and Ask Ellen.

Did I mention she also makes the cutest clothes ever!  She currently has lines for Star Wars, Syfy, Doctor Who and Star Trek. And she tells us there is a new franchise coming soon!

You can meet Ashley at the 2013 Star Wars Weekends now thu June 9th.  Just head to Darth’s Mall (love that name) over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
