Why Main Street in Disneyland is Better than Walt Disney World

A Look at What Makes the Disneyland Main Street Stand Out

What Makes Disneyland Main Street better than Disney World

Summer of 2014 was the first time I had ever been to Disneyland.  It was one of those moments you wait for.  I could not wait to see for myself the park that Walt build.  I was not disappointed.

Armed with my camera I ran around that park taking photos of bobsleds, toads driving cars and even a Southern style ghost house.  But anytime I was ready to sit down I found myself sitting on a bench on main street.

At first I thought it was convenience but as I sat there I realized I liked it here.  There was something special about Disneyland’s Main Street.  A buzz.  Abundance of movement. Even a bit of the unexpected.

Now I love my Magic Kingdom.  But to be honest the Magic Kingdom’s Main Street is really a portal the hub and beyond.

Disneyland is special and let me tell you the reasons why…

1. The Food

I’ll start with the easiest first.  There are a lot more options on Disneyland’s Main Street.  And many of them are unique to this park.

Jolly Holiday Cafe

This Mary Poppins themed cafe is perfect for grabbing a bit to drink and then taking a seat outside to watch what is happening on Main Street.

One of the best items for a hot day is the Practically Perfect Punch (Merry Cherry Lemonade). It’s actually a pomegranate limeade that is the perfect balance of tart and sweet.

Just across the street you will find the famous Hot Dog Stand.  I am not sure of the corn dogs are as good as some say but I can tell you having one on Main Street is wonderful.

2. The Vehicles

At Walt Disney World most of the vehicles are just for display or only used one or twice a day.  Not at Disneyland.  Here the is a constant flow of vehicles.  Everything from cars, to buses, to carriages.  It really makes you feel like you are on Main Street at the turn of the century.

3. The History

Just knowing that Walt walked here is magical but looking at his legacy is priceless.  Here are just a couple of items that stood out to me.You could spend days here finding more and more nuggets of vintage Disney.

The Main Street Cinema where you can still take a break and catch a classic Mickey Mouse cartoon.  There are 6 movies at any one time but Steamboat Willie is guaranteed.

Getting to sit in Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and imagine Walt himself working on the animatronics to get them just right.

The Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor is a personal favorite of my husband’s.  He loves that there is a reason it is on the left hand of Main Street.  It is because Disneyland was a popular date spot and having it on the left meant you passed by on your way OUT of the park.  So you could buy your sweetheart an ice cream and have a leisurely stroll to end an evening.

4. The Entertainment

At Walt Disney World you stand in line for characters.  At Disneyland they surround you.  They come out of nowhere and suddenly you are part of the show.

How would you like to get sass instructions  from Creuella DeVille?

See Goofy bust-a-move?

Or where can you see chipmunks perform ballet?

Put all of this together and Disneyland Main Street becomes a destination all it’s own.  You could spend hours sitting on a bench with a corn dog and a Practically Perfect Punch watching people and characters pass by.

Thank you Walt.  My hat is off to you.  Excellent job.

This looks really amazing! It’s been years since I’ve been do Disney World and I’ve never been to Disneyland but this makes me want to add it to my list of places to go this year!

Agreed!! I have definitely spent countless hours on Main Street. I’ve never watched the parades anywhere else either. We grab a cone from the Gibson Girl, sit on the curb and people watch 🙂

I love the ice cream parlor! It’s my favorite spot on a hot day before the parade on Main Street.

It’s been 10 years since we’ve been to Disneyland, but I do remember all the cars. I guess it is because California has such a great car culture!
